Night 2018 - IMG_8200
The Orion nebula close to setting on the western horizon, is reflected in the waters of Lake Clifton, Western Australia. The reflection of the Orion nebula is surrounded by the Thrombolites that line the shore of the lake. This is where using slightly longer focal lengths than the usual wide angles really shines.
At the moment this scene was taken, Orion was about 10 degrees elevation, and using a Canon 50mm lens I shot a vertical mosaic of 4 images to capture the constellation and some of its reflection in the water. All camera and lens settings were kept the same for all panels. A tracking mount was used for the sky and turned off for the foreground panels. Stitching in PTGui, noise reduction, saturation and some brightness / contrast adjustment in Photoshop. Details below.
